    On Monday the 25th of August 2008, we did our second, more refined business proposal in which we focused on points such as the speed, security, why producers and consumer would be interested , target market and we briefly touched on the way in which we intended to gain funding for the concept project. This post will be reinforcing this presentation.

    The Speed

    This concept was one of the ideas that was heavily criticised in our first presentation. Our response to this was to explain how we have improved the current Solid State Drive – which we have tagged – SSD2. Why SSD? SSD makes use of no moving parts which means that the device is not fragile, is quieter and allow faster transfer times. This is ideal for running programs and streaming media directly from the device.

    The Security

    This device makes use of full disk encryption which is desirable because it encrypts every piece of data on the device including temporary files. The temporary files are removed from the device automatically once they are no longer of any use. HBH provides software to the resellers that allow them to load files securely onto the device under the full disk encryption. This software will only be available to our resellers, not to the general public.

    Target Market and Why

    We suggested that the wisp would be best used in the software, record label and gaming industry. This is so as it allows these industries to protect their files by making use of the full disk encryption. All of these industries would require high speed streaming rates to be effective, and the wisp provides up to 5GB’s through the WB (Wisp Bus). Consumers do not have root access to the files which makes it difficult to pirate. The average consumer will enjoy our product as they no longer need to carry large devices and CD’s around with them, they can simply use the wisp.

    We intend on marketing our product through our website and through print adverts in magazines and newspapers. This will be a great way in which to bring our products to the masses.

    Funding

    We have decided that we could obtain funding from venture capitalist, but feel that this is not the best option as there are very often heavy terms and conditions attached to this kind of funding. We could also attempt to obtain a loan from a bank, or we could issue shares to the value of 49% of the company to the general public.

    That is what we have been thinking so far, please feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts. We have attached the PowerPoint that we presented. It can be downloaded by clicking on the below link;

    As our group/company’s first project design we were tasked with the challenge of creating some new kind of revolutionary product related to I.T. in some form or the other; be it hardware or software.

    The idea we came up with is that of the “Wisp”. It is essentially a new format in which media is able to be distributed and stored. The easiest way to describe this new product is to think of a USB flash drive; a portable and easy way of storing varying quantities of information.

    There are, of course, differences between our product and the USB however. When designing the concept behind “Wisp” we focused more on security and how to implement it effectively within a piece of hardware (”Secure Media Solutions“). Piracy has of course become a large problem in the I.T. industry and has lead to many companies losing vast amounts of money due to lack of sales.

    Unlike USB our product is essentially a read - only format that uses data encryption to prevent users from manipulating or copying core data. Any temporary or obsolete files present within the folder are immediately deleted, leading to less corruption of data.

    Rather than selling them “empty” straight to consumers (like USB) they would be sold to producers who could then put the information/data  (anything from music to movies) on the device and sell it to consumers.

    The price would then be based on the amount of data that the device can hold (with a maximum of up to 80 Gb). The rough idea was to sell it at about $6 USD per Gigabyte. This can turn out to be rather expensive, but that is the usual affair with new technologies these days.

    Due to the fact that this is just a project, we did take some liberties while coming up with the idea. In order for this to actually work on a plug-and-play type basis our device would have to use high streaming rates (5Gb/s to be exact) and lead us to creating “SSD2″ technologies (in order to achieve higher capacities). We did not go completely overboard however as although these technologies are obviously not around yet, they are not completely impossible to achieve. We would also then go on to create our own type of Bus system aptly named “WB” or Wisp Bus which would then present problems with certain levels of compatibility concerning drivers, hardware etc. as it would have to be eased into the market.

    This is basically the rought idea behind the “Wisp”, please feel free to leave any comments as input is greatly appreciated.
